Month-by-Month Safari Temperature & Clothing Guide

October: The Post-Monsoon Refresh

  • Morning Safari (approx. 6:30 AM – 10:00 AM): ~18°C (64°F). Crisp and refreshing with a light breeze.
  • Afternoon Safari (approx. 2:30 PM – 6:00 PM): ~33°C (91°F). Warm and sunny; sun protection is needed.
  • What to Wear: Light cotton trousers and shirts in olive green or khaki. Keep a light windbreaker handy for the first hour of the morning drive.

November: The Ideal Balance

  • Morning Safari: ~14°C (57°F). Distinctly chilly; the wind in a moving, open vehicle makes it feel much cooler.
  • Afternoon Safari: ~28°C (82°F). Extremely pleasant, bright, and comfortable.
  • What to Wear: Layering is vital. Wear an ochre or forest green fleece/sweater over a light t-shirt for the morning, which you can shed by 9:30 AM.

December & January: Peak Winter Chill

  • Morning Safari: ~7°C to 10°C (45°F – 50°F) (Can occasionally drop to 4°C). Biting, piercing cold. Open Gypsies offer no wind protection.
  • Afternoon Safari: ~22°C (72°F). Beautiful and sunny, but drops rapidly after 5:00 PM.
  • What to Wear: Heavy winter gear in muted tones. Thermal innerwear, a heavy insulated jacket (dark olive or brown), a beanie to cover your ears, gloves, and a heavy scarf to block the wind.

February: The Perfect Transition

  • Morning Safari: ~12°C (54°F). Cold but manageable.
  • Afternoon Safari: ~26°C (79°F). Perfectly warm with clear skies.
  • What to Wear: An earth-toned medium-weight jacket or sweatshirt for the morning safari; comfortable linen or cotton trousers for the afternoon drive.

March: Spring & Rising Heat

  • Morning Safari: ~18°C (64°F). Mild and highly pleasant.
  • Afternoon Safari: ~32°C (90°F). Hot and dry; the sun starts getting quite sharp.
  • What to Wear: Standard summer cotton clothing. Opt for lightweight khaki or forest green cargo pants and shirts. You might want a very light linen shirt for the first 30 minutes of the morning drive.

April: The Start of the Summer Heat

  • Morning Safari: ~24°C (75°F). Warm from the get-go; no jackets needed.
  • Afternoon Safari: ~38°C (100°F). Intense heat. A hooded vehicle is highly recommended for afternoon drives.
  • What to Wear: Loose, light-colored ochre, beige, or light olive cotton/linen clothing. Full sleeves are preferred over short sleeves to protect your skin from direct sun radiation.

May & June: Extreme Peak Summer

  • Morning Safari: ~30°C (86°F). Already hot by 7:30 AM.
  • Afternoon Safari: ~42°C to 45°C (108°F – 113°F). Scorching heat with dusty winds. A hooded vehicle is absolutely critical to prevent heat stroke during the afternoon drive.
  • What to Wear: The absolute lightest, most breathable fabrics you own. Stick strictly to beige, khaki, and light ochre—these shades blend perfectly with the dried summer grasslands and reflect heat much better than dark forest greens or blacks.
